Description

Zanzibar, also known as Unguja in Swahili, is an island positioned in the Indian Ocean, 22 miles (35 km) from the east-central coast of Africa. In 1964, Zanzibar merged with Tanganyika on the mainland along with Pemba Island and other smaller isles to form the United Republic of Tanzania. The island spans an area of 600 square miles (1,554 square km) and had an estimated population of 713,000 in 2007.

Both Zanzibar and its companion island Pemba are believed to have been part of the African mainland in ancient times. The separation of Pemba from the continent is thought to have happened during the Miocene Epoch, approximately 23 to 5.3 million years ago, whereas Zanzibar became an island in the Pliocene Epoch, about 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago, or potentially even later.

The foundational geology of these islands is primarily limestone, with the addition of raised sand and sandstone formations. The islands also feature various deposits resembling those found on the nearby mainland, a result of extensive limestone weathering, erosion, and geological shifts. This has led to a diverse soil composition across the islands, including red earths, loams, clays, and sands. In certain regions, notably the eastern, southern, and northern parts of Zanzibar as well as the western smaller islands, flat expanses of coral limestone are evident, occasionally covered by a layer of shallow red earth or alluvium.
